AN INVESTIGATION OF LEADERSHIP QUALITIES OF KIBBUTZ-RAISED YOUNG MEN: STAGE ONE.
Abstract
The problem central to this study is 'What makes a successful leader of men.' More specifically, the study investigates what makes for successful junior officership. In attempting to answer these questions, the study investigates (a) whether youth from Kibbutzim (collective settlements) make better junior officers than others; (b) the characteristics relevant to successful army leadership that the unique Kibbutz experience might foster. The study focuses on three types of variables: the dependent variable - the 'good officer', which is defined as the officer who successfully motivates and directs his men; the predictor variables which are officer activities predicted as positively related to good officership; and the conditioning variables which are officer qualities hypothesized as related to the predictor variables. The conditioning variables are being measured during Officer Candidate School. The dependent and predictor variables will be measured after one year of service as an officer. One instrument has already been used. It measures apart from the conditioning variables - the officer candidates' attitudes and values towards the army. (Author)
