A FEASIBILITY INVESTIGATION OF THE FREE FLIGHT RANGE FOR SCRAMJET RESEARCH.

Abstract

The capability for simultaneous duplication of prototype Mach and Reynolds numbers has made worthwhile an examination of the free flight range as a possible laboratory facility for scramjet tests. As a first step, the present work considers the key questions of launch and acceptable free flight of an annular combustor scramjet model, the performance of a valve for injecting gaseous hydrogen, and the question of accurate measurement of thrust. Sixteen range firings were carried out to investigate possible model and fuel injection valve designs for potential application to a 1.5-inch diameter hydrogen burning model. (Author)
