MESOMETEOROLOGICAL STUDIES OF PRECIPITATION.
Abstract
The report is primarily a progress report on Professor Bergeron's 'Project Pluvius.' The up-dating of daily and mean monthly rainfall maps for the networks is continuing. Catchment values are adjusted according the exposure of the gauges using values he has developed from his studies. The catchment at the surface as compared to gauges heights of 1.5 meters is under study. He has statistics based on a limited number of observations during the months of June thru November 1962. These show the mean of the difference between the two gauges divided by the mean monthly amount of rainfall vary from 0.9% and 9.2%. Values given for treeless plain is 8.3 plus or minus 0.5% for forested areas 2.6 plus or minus 0.4% and the transition is 6.5 plus or minus 0.6%. The July - October 1963 data for these exposures are 7.3 plus or minus 1.4%, 2.0 plus or minus 1.7% and 5.2 plus or minus 0.6% respectively. Errors caused by quasistationary vortexes are still under study. Two areas with terraces have been selected for the study. Surface wind flow patterns during snow storms, as determined from snow deposits on poles and trees, are shown for two situations. (Author)
