INVESTIGATION OF MAINTENANCE-FREE HIGH RATE, NICKEL-CADMIUM BATTERIES FOR AIRCRAFT APPLICATION.

Abstract

The first completed battery/charger system was assembled and tested extensively over the complete operating temperature range of -40F to +140F. The adjustments of the various sensing circuits are described and their performance is discussed. Circuit modifications to satisfy performance requirements over the temperature range are described and their performance is discussed. Filtering circuits required for accurate sensing of average voltage values are described and discussed. Four additional battery/charger systems were assembled and tested over the complete operation temperature range of -40F to +140F. Summaries of each of the five system performances are presented and discussed. Accelerated life tests on the charger boost modules are described and results presented. Reverse current relay operation, and its effect on the electrical system, with particular emphases on the battery/charger system characteristics are discussed. (Author)
