THE SHIPBUILDING INDUSTRY AND ITS USE OF GRADUATES, WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE UNITED KINGDOM.
Abstract
The report describes visits to the schools of naval architecture in the United Kingdom, and comments upon certain recent changes in the education and training of naval architects. The employment of graduates in the different shipbuilding countries is discussed, and attention is drawn to the fact that the two countries with the greatest growth rates, Japan and Russia, employ a far greater proportion of graduates than does the UK in relation to total employment in the industry. One Japanese spokesman has said that this use of graduates is one of the two most important reasons why Japan has built up her shipbuilding industry to the point where her output of ships has been the highest in the world for the last three years, and now accounts for practically half of the world's total outside of the USSR and China.
