RADIATION OF SPATIALLY INCOHERENT NOISE: POINT AND LINE SOURCES.

Abstract

The total field radiated to any field point from an array of non-directional statistically independent (spatially incoherent) noise sources is demonstrated to be calculable on the basis of the inverse square law addition of sound pressure squared. Based on this concept we have calculated the noise fields of points and of straight lines. Using as a reference the field from a point source of same total power, the actual beam-on field departs by less than 1 dB from the reference when the CPA is greater than 1.12 times the line length. In experimental work, loudspeakers simulated a line of point sources. Considering the finite area of the actual sources, reasonably good agreement with predictions was observed. (Author)
