ARC-DRIVEN MHD GENERATOR.

Abstract

Described in this report are experiments performed with a Hall MHD generator of rectangular cross section. Experiments with three channel configurations are discussed: (1) a straight-wall channel, (2) a rectangular channel employing curved electrode walls, and (3) a straight-wall channel utilizing boundary layer suction on each of the two electrode walls. The length, flow volume and flow area distribution were the same for each channel configuration as were the experimental operating conditions: 120 g/s nitrogen mass flow rate, channel entrance Mach number of 2.0 and an applied magnetic field of 6.9 Kgauss. A scale drawing of the straight rectangular channel is given. The curved channel results were particularly interesting and significant. For certain loading conditions, it was possible to obtain power levels of about 50 kW where previously, with a straight channel, stall phenomena related to transverse J x B forces limited generated power to 40 kW or less.
