A SURVEY OF FEEDBACK PARAMETERS FOR PNEUMATIC POSITION SERVOS,

Abstract

The purpose of this memo was to consider which combinations of the available feedback parameters should be used to obtain a particular response characteristic from a pneumatic servo. The open loop transfer functions are given for a pneumatic position servo with various combinations of position, velocity, acceleration, and pressure feedback. Root locus sketches are used to indicate the general type of response attainable. It was found that every useful feedback combination contains at least the second derivative of position. When used with position feedback, the following will give increased damping, but will not increase the resonant frequency: (1) Acceleration or washed-out velocity; (2) Differential pressure or washed-out pressure. In order to obtain both increased damping and an increased resonant frequency, velocity and position must be used with one of the following: (1) Acceleration; (2) Differential pressure or washed-out pressure.
