AN ANALYTICAL SOLUTION OF THE BOLTZMANN EQUATION FOR NEUTRON SLOWING-DOWN LENGTH.

Abstract

An analytical method of solution for the second spatial moment (neutron slowing-down length) is developed and evaluated. This solution is similar in principle to the solution obtained first by Fermi and later by Marshak for the slowing-down length of neutrons in a mixture of hydrogen plus an infinitely heavy element, except that the solution presented here is applicable to any mixture of real elements in general including or excluding hydrogen with no limit on the number of elements considered. The solution is restricted to the P-1 approximation of transport theory which admits only elastic, scatter which is isotropic in the center of mass system. (Author)
