TRENDS IN USAGE OF SILVER

Abstract

This report is one in a series of five (the others being beryllium, molybdenum, platinum, and tantalum), in which the influence on applications of changing technology is explored. Little concern is expressed regarding present stockpile specifications, but it is noted that much Treasury silver is of low grade and unusable for many applications without refining. A possibly inadequate domestic refinery capacity may limit the rate at which this metal can be used. The future supply of silver appears to be inadequate. While no significant new applications are known, despite price increases, consumption continues to climb.
