SELF-ABSORPTION IN AN ARGON PLASMA.

Abstract

Absorption coefficients of the 6965A argon line were determined experimentally in a 170 ampere, 2.5 atmosphere, vortex-stabilized arc by comparing probed and unprobed intensity profiles of the arc with the aid of an existing computer program. Using an image of the arc as the probing source, an optical system provided a probing beam with a constant intensity and a spectral intensity comparable to that of the arc. Although some resolution was lost because of arc oscillations, absorption coefficients as high as 0.6 per centimeter were determined. Also, two distinct absorption transitions were observed in the 6965A line. (Author)
