A THEORETICAL INVESTIGATION OF BOUNDED PLASMAS.

Abstract

The effect of boundaries on the two-stream instability problem for a plasma with a negligible thermal velocity spread is investigated. Two models, a slab and a cylinder of plasma, are used in the calculation of the surface charge density at the boundaries. A dispersion relation is obtained for each model with and without an externally applied magnetic field. From the dispersion relation it is shown that instabilities in the bounded plasmas are not appreciably different from those in an infinite plasma with boundaries. (Author)
