RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF A BRUSHLESS DC STARTER-GENERATOR.

Abstract

The report discusses subassemblies for the electro-mechanical converter. Preliminary performance tests were conducted to evaluate the machine's performance characteristics. Electrical and thermal evaluation of the machine in the generating mode will be conducted when the final rectifier assemblies are received. The work on the statis commutator by RCA is continuing. 400 amp capability has been demonstrated on breadboard units and the package has been redesigned to improve its thermal storage capabilities. Assembly and test fixtures for the prototype unit have been designed and the necessary parts for the assembly are on order. Tests were conducted on the rotary transformer with the laminated disk construction proving the feasibility of the design. An additional core using 'L' type laminations was constructed to explore methods to further reduce the excitation current requirements. This design will be evaluated both mechanically and electrically and its performance compared with the laminated disk type. (Author)
