A PHASE-REVERSAL PULSE MODULATOR AND PULSE-COMPRESSION FILTER FOR A COHERENT RADAR,

Abstract

A coherent, 13-bit phase-reversal pulse modulator and pulse-compression filter was built and tested. When the phase-modulated pulse was added to 100-Mc band-limited white noise and passed through the pulse-compression filter and a 20-Mc bandpass filter, a signal-to-noise improvement of 14.7 db was measured. On the basis of this experimental signal-to-noise improvement measurement, the maximum range obtainable for a radar employing this type of phase-modulated pulse/pulse-compression system was calculated and compared to the maximum range obtainable from a short-pulse radar transmitting the same amount of energy. The range obtained with the pulse-compression radar was 14% less than that obtained with the short-pulse radar. If both radars transmit the same peak power, corresponding to a peak-power limitation, the pulse-compression radar would have 63% greater range. (Author)
