PROGRAM FOR THE EXPLORATORY DEVELOPMENT OF A CONTACT IONIZATION THRUSTER. PART 1. MICROTHRUSTER SYSTEMS.

Abstract

This report describes tasks completed on the contact ion engine exploratory development program from March 1967 to March 1968. A prototype microthruster system was developed and tested. Thrust level for this thruster was 10 micropounds. An advanced microthruster system was developed and tested. Thrust level for this thruster was 0 to 20 micropounds in five micropound steps. Two flight qualified units were fabricated. Radioisotope heating was investigated for contact ion microthrusters. Several radioisotopes were considered and possible designs developed. Results of this study contributed to development and testing of a demonstration microthruster with simulated isotope heating. Thrust level for this thruster was 100 micropounds. (Author)
