DEVELOPMENT OF A BROADBAND, S-BAND AMPLIFIER FOR USE IN THE SIGNAL PROCESSING TEST FACILITY.

Abstract

The VA-915A No. X2, a TWT, was operated at 40 microsecond pulse length and 0.0028 duty cycle up to a beam voltage of 180 kilovolts without any sign of instabilities or oscillations. The gain variation of plus or minus 0.5 db indicated excellent transducer and termination matches. A bandwidth of 370 Milz was obtained at 180 Kv, with a peak gain of 34 db, output power of 6 MW and efficiency of 23.5%. The gain and bandwidth indicated that the electron beam was too small in diameter, causing insufficient rf drive power to completely saturate the beam. This tube is ready for shipment as the first interim tube. The VA-915A No. X3, a Twystron amplifier, will have a more efficient cathode heater assembly and a larger-diameter electron beam. The klystron input cavities are being assembled and the other assemblies are progressing well. The VA-915A No. X4, a TWT, is in a subassembly stage at present. The alumina pillbox windows have proven quite successful; consequently, the work on the beryllia block window was terminated. (Author)
