A DEEP-SEA ELECTRICAL-RESISTIVITY PROBE.

Abstract

An electrical resistivity probe is described that obtains in situ profiles of resistivity versus depth and thereby provides measurements of the porosity and density in deep sea sediments. The probe, which is 13 m long and weighs 700 kg in water, is lowered by means of a simple wire rope and operates automatically after penetration - caused by its own weight - into the sea floor. Successive probings can be made while the ship is drifting or moving slowly. Good correlation has been obtained between electrical probe measurements and measurements made on cores taken nearby.
