PLASMA PHYSICS AND STATISTICAL MECHANICS IN BRUSSELS, BELGIUM,

Abstract

This report gives an account of two separate liaison visits to Brussels. The first visit was devoted to the Laboratoire de Physique des Plasmas, Ecole Royale Militaire, where Professor Paul E. Vandenplas and Dr. A. M. Messiaen have been carrying, for the last six years, what is probably the most significant research in the theory and experiment of the Tonks-Dattner resonances in a cylindrical plasma column. The second visit was to Professors I. Prigogine and R. Balescu, of the Faculte des Sciences, Universite Libre de Bruxelles, who together direct a large group of scientists working on all aspects of statistical physics. We give an account of their most recent work, particularly as regards the covariant formulation of relativistic statistical mechanics. (Author)
