DIFFRACTION OF LIGHT BY CARBON PARTICLES OF LUMINOUS FLAMES,
Abstract
The optical properties of luminous carbon flames (Hefner candle) are studied, with the assumption that the propagation of light in the flame is essentially due to diffraction by carbon particles contained in the flame. It was possible to demonstrate and to measure all characteristic properties for a turbid medium in the flame. Based on Mie's theory of the optics of turbid media, the optical properties of the flame are calculated and related to the experimental results, using the optical constants for massive carbon of the particles previously determined by us. A comparison between the experimental and the theoretical results, in most cases, yielded satisfactory agreement, so that the assumption of the nature of the flame may be considered as confirmed.
