NOSE CONE ATTITUDE CONTROL BY MEANS OF JETS.

Abstract

It has been suggested that a jet system be used with a platform for nose cone attitude control. The platform would be torqued in roll so that the couple due to the jet stream, acting normal to the plane of the platform, would cause the nose cone to take the shortest path in aligning itself with the desired reentry angle. Another suggestion that has been offered is to have the nose cone itself act as the platform. Jets would be used to torque the nose cone in roll in the same manner that the platform was torqued. The roll signal in each case would come from the inner gimbal of the reference gyro. This memorandum investigates several methods of control of the mass flow rate and determines estimates of the required impulse for turnover for various conditions of separation. This investigation is in pitch alone. The results apply to both the platform arrangement and the nose cone as platform arrangement. (Author)
