DEMONSTRATION OF TRANSPLACENTAL PASSAGE OF ERYTHROCYTES BY FLUORESCENT GROUP ANTIBODIES,

Abstract

The concept of foeto-maternal immunization of obstetrical origin seems to imply that foetal erythrocytes can pass into the maternal circulation. However, this hypothesis was held long before being demonstrable by direct observation. In the past year, however, a fairly high number of cases have shown the passage of foetal erythrocytes into the blood of the mother. But working jointly upon the blood of pregnant women and on adults of both sexes, a non-negligible percentage of the latter were found to possess foetal type erythrocytes outside of all parturition. This is the main criticism of the Kleihauer and Betke method; while it affirms the presence of erythrocytes which are carriers of foetal hemoglobin, nothing proves that these erythrocytes stem from the foetus. Therefore, an attempt was made to carry out this task using fluorescent antibodies. (Author)
