FLUID-EXCITATION CRITERIA FOR A CYLINDER OSCILLATING IN A STEADY FLOW.

Abstract

Concepts are presented which, when considered with the available experimental data, permit the formulation of criteria to describe the fluid-dynamic properties associated with a circular cylinder oscillating in a steady flow. A comparison between oscillating and stationary cylinders is made. Experimental evidence from various sources is employed in the verification of the fluid-excitation criteria presented. Notably, these criteria define, qualitatively, the boundaries of the dependence of vortex-excitation of a cylinder on its motion. (Author)
