ACOUSTIC AND OTHER PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF DEEP SEA SEDIMENTS IN THE TYRRHENIAN ABYSSAL PLAIN.
Abstract
Twenty-one cores taken in the Tyrrhenian Abyssal Plain (40 n. mi west of Naples) were analyzed for acoustic and mass physical properties. Bottom topography and sub-bottom structure were measured in the same area by means of echo-sounding. The microtectonics of the bottom layers demonstrated by the core analysis is not visible in the echograms due to the integrating process of echo-sounders with large beam widths, thus demonstrating that echograms give only the general features of a geologically complicated area. To obtain a clearer idea of an extended zone, high-density coring is proposed, possibly by quick sampling methods such as developed by the authors using a resistivity probe. (Author)
