ON THE STABILITY OF PARALLEL EDGE CRACKS,

Abstract

Based on the Griffith-Orowan theory, the instability of parallel edge cracks in a tensile specimen is determined. The theoretical 'strength-crack size' curve for the edge cracks follows closely the trend of the corresponding curve for the single interior crack, but is generally lower than the latter. The results indicate that the edge cracks are more detrimental than the compatible interior crack. (Author)
