FORMULAS FOR THE ELASTIC PROPERTIES OF FIBER-REINFORCED COMPOSITES,

Abstract

The elastic properties of thin unidirectional composites are governed by three independent macroscopic moduli, the upper and lower bounds of which can be computed from unified formulas. Since material properties (Ui) can be separated from the geometric properties (Vi) in a laminated composite according to the invariant theory of composite materials, a direct link between the properties of constituent materials and those of laminated composites can be calculated through a set of simple formulas. The lower-bound values, which have been found to agree approximately with observed data for fiber-reinforced composites, are shown in this note as an example. (Author)
