PHRASE-STRUCTURE ORIENTED QUERY LANGUAGE. VOLUME I. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION.
Abstract
The report describes the development of a computer-based software system that responds directly to queries and instructions stated in natural English. One version of the system (Phase II) operates experimentally on a GE 225 computer system. An improved version (Phase III) has been designed and partially implemented for operation on more powerful computer systems. The software system has capability for analyzing the structure of an English sentence and setting up the proper sequence of actions necessary to carry out the data retrieval or calculation implied in the sentence. The operation of the system is independent of the content, extent, and organization of data, and permits addition to the data through direct English instructions. The Phase III system also includes provisions for deleting and modifying data. The system vocabulary is directly expandable by the user. (Author)
