LABORATORY VISION TESTS OF MILITARY AIRCREWMEN. PART 1. 1966 TESTS.
Abstract
A battery of vision tests was administered to 232 military aircrewmen who were participating in flight tests being conducted by the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Measures of foveal and peripheral visual acuity, eye dominance, auditory- and visual-response time, and visual-search time were obtained. Visual-response time correlated significantly with visual-search time. Subjects who were slower in the response-time test tended to be slower searchers. Subjects who smoked were slower in the search tasks than non-smokers. There was no difference in performance on response or search tasks between left- and right-eye dominants. Analysis of the search times as a function of target location indicated that less than 20% of the subjects used a regular search pattern when looking for a target. (Author)
