A STUDY OF SOFT X-RAY TECHNIQUES USING ELECTRON EXCITED EMISSION SPECTRA.

Abstract

A high vacuum X-ray spectrometer, which could be operated using flat or horizontally curved crystal configurations, was analyzed to determine its operating parameters and capabilities. The Al K alpha sub 3, 4 satellite lines were resolved using the curved crystal configuration, but spectrometer alignment and analysis of X-ray emission spectra were extremely difficult. The flat crystal spectrometer was considerably easier to align and operate in comparison to the curved crystal configuration. The Cr K alpha doublet and the Al K alpha sub 3, 4 satellite lines were able to be resolved when using the flat crystal configuration; therefore, this spectrometer configuration has enough resolution for analysis of most X-ray emission spectra.
