CRITICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL CONTRIBUTION TO THE BIOLOGY OF B. MONOCYTOGENES WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO INFECTIOUS MONONUCLEOSIS IN MAN,
Abstract
The microorganism B. monocytogens hominis incubated by Nyfeldt from the blood of the patient in a case of infectious mononucleosis is described so that we must regard it as a close relative of B. monocytogenes (Murray, Webb and Swann). In animal experimentation on the rabbit, B. monocytogenes causes an affection which has several characteristics in common with the conditions in man which have been designated as 'infectious mononucleosis' and as 'lymphmoid glandular fever.' A severe conjunctivitis of the rabbit with participation of the cornea is described which can be induced invariably as shown by experiments with B. monocytogenes. B. monocytogenes in the rabbit was shown to be both contagious as well as difficult to transmit. It consequently behaves in the same manner as we must assume on human pathology for the suspected pathogen of the syndrome of the disease described by Glanzmann. In monocytogenic infection, the blood culture remains often and, in spontaneously affected animals, almost regularly sterile. (Author)
