COMPARATIVE STUDIES OF PSEUDOTUBERCULOSIS, PARATYPHOID, PASTEURELLA, AND PLAGUE BACILLI,

Abstract

Differential diagnosis between pseudotuberculosis, paratyphoid, pasteurella, and plague bacilli can be carried out with certainty by culture and serological methods. The pseudotuberculosis group is uniform with respect to culture and breaks down into at least 5 serologically distinct types (IA, IB, IIA, IIB, and III). These types differ from each other only in their O antigen, not in their H antigen. Two of these types, types IIA and IIB, have serological relationships through one of their thermostable antigens to the paratyphoid B group. The paratyphoid group breaks down into at least 30 different types which can be separated by cultures and serological methods. The pasteurella group consists of at least 6 types distinguishable in culture, the serology of which, like that of the plague bacillus, has not yet been closely studied. The significance of the various types, which are practically constant, lies chiefly in the diagnostic and epidemiological fields. (Author)
