THE APPLICABILITY OF SUDDEN-DEATH TEST TECHNIQUES TO THE FATIGUE LIFE OF BALL BEARINGS.
Abstract
The sudden-death median rank analysis was applied to ball-bearing fatigue-life data previously reported to determine its usefulness and applicability to bearing-life tests. The results of this analysis were compared to the original serial test data to determine its validity. The ideal case would have the sudden-death life estimates and the serial-life estimates to be equal at some predetermined level of percent failed. Results show that most life estimates made by the sudden-death method deviate by 20% on the average compared to the serial method, and require only about 22% of the time per test needed to obtain the serial-data sample.
