A FURTHER STUDY OF THE TEMPORAL INTEGRATION OF LOUDNESS,

Abstract

The perceived loudness of a 1000 c/s tone under different conditions of intensity (51-100 db) and duration (30-2000 msec) of stimulation was investigated in this experiment. A two-step scaling method, involving cross-modality matching and numerical scaling of the matching continuum, was used for measuring loudness. It was found that loudness could be described as a logarithmic function of stimulus duration until a maximum loudness level was reached after 600-1000 msec. This maximum loudness level was found to occur at shorter durations for lower intensities. In addition, an alternative exponential function was discussed. (Author)
