PROGRESS REPORT ABSTRACTS.
Abstract
The program encompasses a range of investigations, conducted on humans or lower forms of life as required, geared toward elucidating the fundamental characteristics of the individual systems regulating life processes. Interest is focused on the activity of the regulatory mechanisms under normal conditions, their control by the nervous and endocrine systems, and the complex interrelationships and feedback mechanisms involved. Special regulatory responses evoked by unusual operational or environmental stresses are considered separately under the biological responses to the environment program. Areas of research interest include: the mechanisms underlying nervous system activity from impulse initiation to transformation into meaningful responses; the endocrine system as a source as well as target for stimulation; and the physiological bases for compensating mechanisms exhibited by the respiratory, thermoregulatory, circulatory and excretory systems.
