L-FORMS OF BACTERIA. II. THE INFLUENCE OF ANAEROBIC CONDITIONS ON CHANGES IN FORM, EVOKED BY PENICILLIN, OF PROTEUS VULGARIS,

Abstract

Under the influence of a penicillin concentration of 2000 units/1 ml of medium, the development of large round bodies of Proteus vulgaris proceeds somewhat differently under anaerobic conditions than in the presence of oxygen. The most important characteristic of such a development is the delay of regeneration into new bacilli and the tendency towards the formation of L-colonies. An unusual method is described of the regeneration of secondary bacilli from large round bodies by means of the so-called central fragmentation. (Author)
