HYDROCARBON FUEL CELL ELECTRODES

Abstract

The report describes the continuing evaluation of electrodes and matrix materials in fuel cell systems utilizing acid electrolytes and operating with impure hydrogen fuel. Several experimental anodes and anode catalysts were evaluated in matrix cells using 5 N H2SO4 (70C, 1% CO) and 85% H3PO4 (150C, 10% CO) electrolytes. These materials comprised mixed noble metals (principally Pt/ Ru) supported on boron carbide or a mixed boron carbide chromium-tungsten oxide substrate.
