GEOLOGY OF UNDERGROUND AIR STORAGE EXPERIMENT CHAMBER EXCAVATION, 401 AREA, NEVADA TEST SITE, NYE COUNTY, NEVADA,

Abstract

This report describes the major geologic features of the excavation used for an experimental underground air storage pilot chamber in the 401 Area of the Atomic Energy Commission's Nevada Test Site. This pilot chamber was designed to provide information for use in designing a full scale underground air storage chamber for the PLUTO Ground Test Facility. The report includes a description of the fractures in the rock walls, lithologic logs of the core holes extending from the excavation into the surrounding rock, and stress-strain curves of rock samples.
