INVESTIGATIONS ABOUT THE PHYSIOLOGICAL SPECIALIZATION OF WHEAT STRIPE-RUST (PUCCINA STRIIFORMIS WEST. F.SP. TRITICI ERIKSS. ET HENN) IN THE PERIOD 1959-1964 AND ABOUT THE SUSCEPTIBILITY BEHAVIOR OF SOME VARIETIES OF WHEAT,

Abstract

A set of wheat varieties is characterized in relation to race identification. The factor of 'periodicity' is added. In Braunschweig 27 races of Stripe Rust were identified during 1959 to 1964, but only 20 could be considered as really independent. The races 58 (England) and 59 (Kenya) are newly described. The historical connection of the races is also characterized. The identified races are arranged according to the countries, the place of collection, the host varieties, the periodicity and the month of collection. In the origins from the USA only race 13 was positively identified. More determinations of other origins must await additional experimentations. The methods of the 'field race description' and the 'greenhouse race determination' are discussed. In all probability only the combination of both can do justice to an exact and comprehensive determination of Stripe Rust races. (Author)
