LOW-DISPERSION HIGH-POWER WAVEGUIDE SYSTEMS.

Abstract

One of the purposes of this program was to investigate the characteristics of oversize rectangular waveguide systems having low dispersion and high peak and average power-handling capabilities. A second purpose was to develop oversize waveguide components which produce low dispersion, low mode conversion and high power-handling capability. Operating frequency bands of 15 percent were desired. Waveguide systems employing flat rectangular waveguides having width, a, in the range between 1.5 and 3.0 free-space wavelengths and height, b, very much less than a were considered. Experimental results obtained at S-band are presented for -3 dB couplers and complete duplexers for flat waveguides having a = 8.00 in. and b = 1.34 in. Included are the results of high-power tests for the complete duplexer and low-power transient tests for the complete duplexer, the -3 dB couplers and an H-plane bend. Theoretical and experimental results are also presented for full-oversize waveguide components. Measured values of the phase and magnitude of the transmission coefficients of side-wall couplers and H-plane bends obtained, at X-band with a magic T bridge, are presented. Results are also presented of an investigation of H-plane bifurcations and top-wall couplers. (Author)
