NATURE OF THE TRANSMITTER SUBSTANCES BETWEEN THE NEURONES IN THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM AND ON THE NERVE-MUSCLE JUNCTION.

Abstract

Work was carried out to determine nature of the chemicals that could be transmitted within nerves, and between the nerve and muscle junction. The technique that had been developed to study the movement of labelled materials along the nerve trunks of invertebrates and lower vertebrate preparations have been made more critical and applied to those preparations and also to the isolated mammal phrenic nerve-muscle preparation. The general conclusion is that glutamate is a privileged chemical and is preferentially transported within the nerve trunk from the central nervous system to the periphery. The experiments show that there is a transport of material from the muscle region up along the motor axons to the central nervous system. The nature of these materials is not yet specified. It is possible that these chemicals play some trophic role in the development and maintenance of nerve muscle activity. (Author)
