INHALATION THERAPY USING BACTERIOPHAGES IN THERAPY-RESISTANT INFECTIONS
Abstract
A new possibility for treating infections--therapy with bacteriophages--is discussed. The bacteriophage is a virus which can multiply only on a living cell, that is to say, on a bacterial cell. The cell which is thus hit is destroyed and the lysis of the bacterium again produces about 50 bacteriophages. Once looked at in this way, bacteriophages appear to be the best means for fighting bacterial infection, especially if one considers the circumstance that here -- in contrast to the antibiotics -- resistance need not be expected. It is important to know that the bacteriophage has high specificity. Therefore, therapy can be effective only if the administered phage encounters its homologous bacterium.
