DESIGN AND PRODUCTION OF THE H.O./B.C. CHART.

Abstract

An H.O./BC chart is, as the name implies, a combination of an H.O sailing chart and a bathymetric contour chart. A series of such charts will provide the mariner with the advantages of a standard nautical chart for offshore navigation and the advantages of a bathymetric contour chart for ocean navigation. The compilation of the first chart in the H. O./BC nautical chart series was a long and complicated process. Since there was no established compilation procedure, decisions were made only after consideration of numerous alternatives. Due to the requirements of the series, a great variety of sources had to be used which resulted in changes to the normal compilation procedure. Throughout the compilation and revision stages, new data were received which altered the chart format and content. The series is now being extended from the Gulf of Siam and the South China Sea, eastward into the Pacific Ocean. Upon completion of present plans, H.O./BC charts will be published covering areas in the Indian Ocean, the eastern Atlantic Ocean, and the western Atlantic Ocean. (Author)
