NARROWBAND INFRARED DETECTION OF IMPORTANT LASER WAVELENGTHS,

Abstract

The report contains Bloembergen's proposal for a narrowband infrared quantum counter (IRQC) has attracted much attention, since it offers a scheme to up-convert radiation in the 1-3 micron m region to the visible region where conventional detectors have better characteristics. The theoretical minimum noise temperature of the IRQC approaches absolute zero, thus the IRQC is only photon noise limited by background and signal fluctuations. The type of IRQC reported here utilizes the energy levels of rare earth ions in crystals. (Author)
