ASSOCIATED YTTERBIUM AND NIOBATE IMPURITIES IN CALCIUM TUNGSTATE,

Abstract

A foremost problem for these materials is that of understanding how the crystal interacts with the impurity ions to produce the observed optical properties. Crucial to calculations bearing on this problem is a knowledge of the location of the impurity ion in the crystal and in particular the relative location of the ion with respect to other impurities. From the electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of the trivalent ytterbium ion in single crystals of CaWO4 we have been able to identify the location of Yb3+ with respect to certain other impurities introduced into this crystal. In this paper we will discuss the details of the spectra obtained, and how the results are used to identify the location of associated impurities. The relation of these results to the problems of the optical spectra of laser crystals is also discussed. (Author
