MECHANISM OF THERMAL DECOMPOSITION OF HMX (1,3,5,7-TETRANITRO-1,3,5,7-TETRAZACYCLOOCTANE),

Abstract

The basic mechanisms by which certain substances can undergo explosive decomposition are not well understood. No generalized models are available to explain the mechanism of explosion in terms of primary electronic and molecular processes. One useful approach has been to study the slow decomposition of metastable materials induced by various stimuli such as heat, light and ionizing radiation. Knowledge concerning these processes such as rate constants and identity of the reactive intermediates, should be helpful for a mechanistic understanding of the fast reactions in explosives.
