TIME AND FREQUENCY DOMAIN CODING TECHNIQUES.

Abstract

This is the second quarterly report on a program to determine and evaluate the most effective means of applying error control coding techniques to high-frequency data modems including the AN/GSC-10, the AN/FYC-5, the AN/FGC-29, and the Sylvania modem (one of whose operational modes is functionally equivalent to the AN/USC-10). The ultimate criteria for the selection of coding techniques will be (1) the performance exhibited in evaluation with real HF channel bit-error data, and (2) the practicality of implementation. This report presents detailed bit-error characteristics for the four modems operating over various HF paths. These characteristics include bit-error rates, bit-error correlations, bit-interleaved block-error distributions, and actual bit-error patterns in time and frequency where appropriate. They are used (1) to categorize the bit-error data, (2) to aid in determining how to most effectively apply error control coding, and (3) to aid in evaluating the performance of selected coding techniques.
