FURTHER STUDIES OF CARRIER AIR WAKE VELOCITY SPECTRA.

Abstract

Experimental measurements of the dynamic axial and vertical velocity fluctuations in the wake of an aircraft carrier model were carried out in a water tunnel. The data was obtained while the carrier was oscillating in pitch motion at prescribed frequencies, and the resulting presentation of the velocity field characteristics was given in terms of power spectra. Examination of the possibility of linear superposition of pitch-induced effects and the spectra for a fixed carrier demonstrated the existence of significant nonlinear interaction, which increased the total spectral energy of the velocity field disturbances. The instrumentation, method of analysis, and data validity are described and discussed, together with information on the applicability of the results for use in simulation studies and/or analyses of the carrier landing operation.
