STUDIES ON SERUM PROTEIN-BOUND POLYSACCHARIDE IN THE DERMATOLOGICAL FIELD. PART I. PROTEIN-BOUND HEXOSE AND HEXOSAMINE IN SERUM OF NORMAL ADULTS AND PATIENTS WITH VARIOUS SKIN DISEASES,

Abstract

The estimation of serum protein-bound hexose (the tryptophan method), hexosamine (the Elson-Morgan's method, modified) and serum mucoprotein (the Winzler's method) in normal adults and patients, resulted in the following outcomes: (1) The serum protein-bound hexose content in normal adults was generally between 86 and 150 mg/dl, the mean being 124 mg/dl, while the content of hexosamine was 70 to 150 mg/dl with the average of 108.9 mg/dl. No definite sexual difference was seen in these contents. (2) Variations in the contents of serum polysaccharide which can be regarded characteristic of each disease were hardly recognized, though increase tendencies in the hexose were observed in the exudative stage of acute eczema, urticaria, lupus vulgaris, and in certain cancers; and decrease tendencies in toxicodermia, lupus erythematodes discoides, melanosis, and in some cases of xanthoma. High levels of the hexosamine were observed in pyodermia, psoriasis, acute systemic lupus erythematodes, and malignant tumors, and decreases of hexosamine were seen in urticaria, purpura, etc. The reciprocal relations in the contents of these substances in urticaria, toxicodermia and psoriasis are noteworthy. (3) The contents of either polysaccharide or mucoprotein showed appreciable variations in individual cases, but the variation of hexose was usually much less compared with that of mucoprotein. There seems to be a sort of proportionality in the contents of the hexosamine and mucoprotein. (Author)
