EXPERIMENTAL GAS TURBINE ENGINE STARTER.

Abstract

A program in which a gas turbine engine starter system was developed is described in this report. The starter developed consists of a gas producer, a turbine, and controls. The gas producer is a unique resonant combustor with four spiral tailpipes supplying intermittent hot gas jets that impinge on the turbine blades. Work covered includes a summary of the first phase that was previously reported in detail in an interim technical report and a description of the investigation carried out during the final two phases of the program. Results of tests on the developed prototype starter are compared with design objectives and performance predictions based on the Phase I investigation. Conclusions are that performance exceeded objectives, weight was within the objective, diameter was acceptably larger while length was shorter than design objectives, and the starter is now ready for application to start actual engines.
