CONSTANT BACK PRESSURE RECEIVER FOR OCEAN HYDRAULICS.

Abstract

Hydrostatic pressure of the ocean can be utilized to develop mechanical power to actuate small hydraulic devices for deep sea operations. This can be accomplished by using a constant back pressure receiver as a low pressure sink. This report deals with the various parameters affecting the design of such a device. The analysis has shown that the energy capacity of a 5-foot diameter spherical shaped Aluminum 3003 receiver filled with Ammonia or evacuated or filled with Freon 114 is about 1 horsepower hour at a depth of 1,000 feet. The analysis has further indicated that using an Aluminum 5454 alloy sphere it is possible to operate at depths up to 29,000 feet, thereby, developing four horsepower for as long as 7.8 hours. Other data has been derived for receivers of stainless steel 316 and glass. (Author)
