THE IONIC CONDUCTIVITY OF PURE AND DOPED AGBR- AND AGCL-CRYSTALS (ZUR IONENIEITFAHIGKEIT VON REINEN UND DOTIERTEN AGBR- UND AGCL-KRISTALLEN),

Abstract

Single crystals were grown by the Bridgman method from 'zone purified' AgBr and AgCl which had been partially doped with Fe-halide, Cd-halide or Ag2S (= or < 100 ppm.) and the measurement samples drawn from them were fitted with silver electrodes after the surfaces had been carefully etched. The measurements were made in a special measurement vessel in a pure nitrogen atmosphere in which it was possible to vary the temperature from -160 to +400 degrees C. The experimental conductivity curves for doped and pure AgCl crystals exhibit the theoretically predicted course. The sharp drop in conductivity in the low temperature region is caused by the association of 'foreign ions' and holes. The results obtained with Ag2S doped AgBr and AgCl are in contradiction with the data of H. Wakabayasi (J. Phys. Soc. Japan 17, 292 (1962)). The method of graphic estimation described here and used in the measurement of ion conductivity can be used only with reserve. Special measurements were also made in a halide atmosphere to determine the effect of an overcharge of incorporated iron or chromium in the form of Fe+++ or Cr+++ on the conductivity as well as to determine the partial hole conductivities.
